CONEY ISLAND

If only once on the pier

   at sunset,

Please look around you.

The water, the waves, the grand

      uncaring force of it all,

The cast iron eternity on an hour

    past and gone;

All come to life in your tears.

Did you notice the rocks,

    methodically erased by the moon

  unseen?

And life is through you.

The breeze of scenery by the ocean

loses itself in your

presence, captivating the

   scattered lens-candy, carefully

 pitter-pattering on

the shelf of the world.

This is given here,

Coney Island.

My perception jives with the world around me.

Created in my eyes,

   and in my eyes alone,

and in my mind and alone,

whispered donations,

 just slip’d away--

but leave the cloud here,

closing me off from you,

locking me into time,

locking me into blue space,

pushing me forward,

   into me,

     surrounded--

        peaceful

This is given here,

Coney Island.
